El Vito

'El Vito' (2021)

'El Vito' is a traditional 16th century folksong and dance music of Andalusia, Spain. Its name refers to Saint Vitus, patron of dancers, and incorporates musical elements typical of the bolero. In Spanish culture, 'El Vito' is a song and dance traditionally performed by women and includes steps of the art of bullfighting.

The composer was first commissioned to arrange the folksong for Elland Silver Youth Band at the Brass in Concert Youth Championships 2019 held at The Sage, Gateshead. The original arrangement incorporated female singers as part of the theatrical performance.

This revised version - arranged exclusively for brass band - captures the song's fiery passion and vigour, with bold and vibrant solos in the cornets, as well as flourishes of foot stomps and castanets.
